Week 12 TapRoot Farms 2014 CSA Newsletter

Hi folks!

The photo to the right is not the most glamorous of spaces at the farm, but a very important one: this is our large walk-in cooler that we use to store fall harvests of vegetables for the winter.  Every spring we do a big clean out and maintenance of this space.  Right now, Sylvan, Michael, and Garfield are repainting, repairing, and replacing plastic on the walls.  First they replaced the doors and fixed up our smaller cooler (connected to this one through the white door), so we are storing all product in there for now.  Annual cooler deep cleaning and maintenance is a big, important task that is essential for us being able to store veggies for the shares all winter.  :)

Fresh Herb Tea Bundles - By Amy

This week you'll find a mixed bunch of herbs that have been wild crafted and grown on the farm. Mint, lemon balm and red clover are some of the plants you'll find in your share, and there's enough in each bundle to make 2 nice pots of tea.

To prepare the tea, cut and keep the clover heads while the water boils on the stove. Once boiled, combine the lemon balm, mint and red clover heads in the teapot and pour water over top. Let the tea infuse for a good 5 minutes before pouring.

Lemon balm and mint are said to be digestives -- calming to the stomach -- and clover is a liver tonic, reducing the 'heat' generated by the stresses of modern life.

Lately I've been reading about Japanese tea culture – there is an art to cultivating a moment to sit down and savour a blend of plants and their distinct aromas. In these buzzy times moments of relaxation are of great value to mind and body.

There is also salt, pepper and low gluten risk in the sausages.

Animal Update

We’ve all been looking forward to the arrival of new piglets for over a month now and we still don’t have any exciting news to share. We’ll be sure to let you know when they finally arrive.

In the meantime, we thought you might enjoy a video of the ducklings that Salmontail River Farm brought to us recently. The video shows the ducklings running around in their new pen in excitement. VERY cute!  Check it out here on Salmontail River Farm’s facebook page. We've also included a photo of them on the right!

What I did on my summer vacation- By Teri & Jon

Thought we'd share some photos of the wonderful two weeks off we just enjoyed, for those of you who are interested. :) The photo to the left is our 2-1/2 year old niece Maevey from Calgary, collecting eggs from the TapRoot hens with her Mom and Dad and Uncle Jon!

Rhubarb Cordial, made with love by Dorothy and Andi at Noggins

Dorothy works at Noggins and does some of the markets, as well as a huge assortment of other farm duties, from the corn maze to the farm stand.  Andi works in the raspberry patch at Noggins.  Together, they bring you Rhubarb Cordial in this week's Entree Fruit share!  Can't wait to try it myself, it looks mouth-watering delicious!

*Note on the strawberries: Noggins let us know that there are some small white "hairs" (for lack of a better description) on some of the berries: this is part of the row cover used to keep the berries growing in the early spring.  They are very fine and can be picked off.

<-- Tomatoes are flowering in the tunnels!

Have a great week everyone!
